‘Scott of the Antarctic’ was a naval officer, a meteorologist and an explorer. He died attempting to be the first to reach the South Pole.
Robert Falcon Scott was born on the 6th of June 1868 in Devonport; he became a naval cadet at the age of 13 and served on a number of ships in the 1880’s and 1890’s. He was appointed commander of the National Antarctic expedition of 1901-04 by the National Geographic Society. The expedition aboard the ship “The Endurance”, included Ernest Shackleton and was a great success. It set a new record for the furthest a person had been toward the South Pole. During the expedition, Ernest Shackleton caught frostbite and had to be dragged the rest of the way by his colleagues, this caused friction between Scott and Shackleton. When Scott returned he was recognised as a national hero. He had also been promoted to Captain. With all this fame he caught the exploring bug. He started planning for another expedition and spent years trying to raise funds. While Scott had caught the bug, Ernest Shackleton had also started planning for another expedition, He raised the funds far quicker and had gone to the Antarctic, setting a new record for the furthest reached toward the South Pole. When Scott heard of this he was determined to better it by trying to reach the South Pole. He planned on using dogs, ponies and mechanical sledges which were a new invention which Scott planned to use to carry the rocks and other items he found on the expedition. He s...
